Digital prescriptions for clinics in India: what to get right

Handwritten prescriptions are fast for the doctor and hard for everyone else. Here is what a good digital prescription includes and how to move your clinic to one.

Why prescriptions go digital

A prescription is read by the patient, the pharmacist, the next doctor and sometimes an insurer. When it is hard to read, mistakes follow: the wrong strength, the wrong frequency or a missed instruction. Digital prescriptions solve legibility, and they also leave a record the doctor can find at the next visit.

What a complete prescription includes

  • Doctor details: name, qualifications, registration number and the clinic's name, address and contact.
  • Patient details: name, age, sex and, where relevant, weight (essential for children).
  • Date of the consultation.
  • Diagnosis or provisional diagnosis, where appropriate.
  • Medicines: name, strength, form, dose, frequency, timing relative to food and duration.
  • Advice and follow-up: diet, tests to be done and when to return.
  • The doctor's signature.

Legible, preferably generic names

Medical regulations in India expect doctors to prescribe legibly and to prefer generic names. Digital prescriptions make this easy: the medicine list can show generic names clearly, with the strength and form spelt out. Rules in this area are updated from time to time, so check the current guidance from the National Medical Commission for your practice.

Write dosage so nobody has to guess

Shorthand like "1-0-1" is familiar to doctors and pharmacists, but patients often misread it. A good digital prescription shows both: the shorthand, plus plain words such as "morning and night, after food, for 5 days". For children, include the dose in millilitres and the weight it was based on.

Use templates, not copy-paste

Most clinics see the same conditions every day. Templates for common prescriptions, such as viral fever or acidity, save time and reduce errors. Review the template for each patient rather than printing it unchanged, and adjust for age, weight, allergies and other medicines.

If your doctors prefer handwriting

Some doctors think best with a pen. A canvas prescription on a tablet lets them write naturally while the prescription is still saved digitally to the patient's record and shared as a clean document.

Share it safely

Sending the prescription on WhatsApp means patients do not lose it and the pharmacy can read it. Share it only with the patient's registered number, keep clinical details out of reminder messages, and record the patient's consent to receive messages, in line with India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

E-prescriptions in NabhayaType from your own templates or write by hand with canvas e-prescription. Every prescription is saved to the patient's record and sent to the patient on WhatsApp when the consult is completed. See e-prescriptions in action
